Are you preparing for the ITIL Foundation examination? To ensure you’re ready to pass it the first time round, we’ve prepared five top tips.
- Learn the modules from the Lifecycle and Capability streams
At the Intermediate level, delegates choose between the Lifecycle and Capability routes. Although it seems a long way off, don’t ignore their modules at the Foundation level. While the Intermediate level demands a deep understanding of every module, you still need to understand the basics at Foundation level. Put time into learning the streams’ modules, abbreviations and jargons.
- Answer from a purely ITIL perspective
Many people make the mistake of answering exam questions based off their own experience. The Foundation exam demands by-the-book answers. In the real world, you can adapt ITIL. Many organizations will adopt ITIL to fulfil one or two purposes, like a better first time fix rate for their Service Desk.
However, while you can run a lightweight version of ITIL in the workplace, that’s not what the Foundation exam is about. You should answer questions according to the textbook, and not your own, version of ITIL.
- Study the key terms
ITIL Foundation tests your general knowledge of ITIL’s key elements, concepts and terminology. The examination questions themselves are quite simple. However, without knowing the terminology, a straightforward question like ‘What are the four P’s of Service Design’ becomes a complete guess.
Knowing ITIL’s key terms makes answering questions quicker, as well as easier. Once you’ve studied the concepts and terminology, you can link them together in your mind. Eventually, answering Foundation level exams will feel like second nature.
- Be thorough
Although preparation will make the exam easier and quicker, you should never skim-read. Make sure when you answer a question, you’ve read it carefully. Some questions will be negatively worded and delegates have been thrown off by this. Watch out for phrasings like, ‘Which of the following is not an objective of Service Transition?’ Knowing every ITIL process won’t gain the mark if you miss the word “not” in the question.
The ITIL Foundation exam is generously timed, so use whatever time you have left to double-check each answer. For many, once the pressure of being timed is off, they can look at the questions with a clearer head.
- Complete practice questions
Practice questions are the best way to gauge your knowledge. They will reveal areas you need to improve and prepare you for the real thing. Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) provide sample questions along with their ITIL Foundation courses.
Be aware that there’s no standardized quality control for the free ITIL sample questions found online. Because they’re not from accredited trainers, they may also be based on outdated versions of ITIL, such as v3, rather than ITIL 2011. Make sure your study material and training are not just current, but also endorsed by AXELOS. That includes textbooks such as the ITIL Foundation Handbook and guides for passing the ITIL Foundation exam.
